ABOUT
GLIMPSE is an interdisciplinary journal that examines the functions, processes, and effects of vision and its implications for being, knowing, and constructing our world(s). Each theme-focused issue features articles, visual essays, interviews, and reviews spanning the physical sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities.
The founders of GLIMPSE believe that there is a desire among academics and the general public for an additional model of publishing and scholarly communications that complements the traditional academic peer-review model. We believe that in the age of electronic communications, we all can benefit from interdisciplinary feedback (or "neighborly review"), more rapid publishing cycles, and the active circulation of current scholarship in the public realm.
GLIMPSE is only available by electronic or print subscription. The journal is released as a PDF available for download, self-administered printing, or for online ordering of printed copies. GLIMPSE could be considered a "hybrid" publication on many levels:
- Publication format: GLIMPSE is published in both electronic and print-on-demand format.
- Audience type: GLIMPSE targets both scholarly and popular audiences. We believe these groups are not mutually exclusive.
- Review process: GLIMPSE contributors have their work reviewed by scholars from other disciplines (what we call "neighborly review" vs. the traditional "peer review" model). GLIMPSE contributors agree to serve as reviewers for future articles.
- Copyright: GLIMPSE contributors retain copyright over their works, and agree to license distribution and resale rights to GLIMPSE for the life of the publishing organizations. Contributors are also encouraged to publish their works under Creative Commons non-commercial, share-alike licenses.
- Compensation: GLIMPSE contributors receive a modest fee for their works.
- Cost: A decentralized, flexible production process allows us to maintain low overhead costs and therefore provide free access to some content.
